Hawaii

June 12, 2023 Travel

Back in February, my wife and I finally got to travel to Hawaii. We were supposed to go a few years back, but COVID canceled that trip. We had booked with United, and they refused to give us a refund. Instead, they gave us credit. I paid about $1300 for 2 tickets. Then they gave us a deadline. We had to use the tickets by the end of the year, or we lost all the money. Definitely some BS. We had made plans to go to Mexico. The tickets were around $600 so I figured I would use my credit. United tried to charge us $1300. I was like, wait a second. They said you can’t use partial credit. It had to be all or nothing. Again some BS. So that meant I needed to find a flight that would use the entire $1300. We figured we would try Hawaii again for our anniversary. This time the tickets were almost $1000 each. United took my entire $1300 and then made us pay another $700. They trying to make up for all that money they lost. We finally booked our trip from Feb 10, 2023 – Feb 17, 2023.

On Feb 10 we left early on United. It was a 10-hour flight. Normally I don’t like any of the airplane food so I packed a sandwich and some chips. I was so glad I did. United didn’t give any food whatsoever on the entire 10-hour flight. People were starving and complaining. I thought they were going to jump me when I pulled out the sandwiches for me and my wife. We got there and checked into the hotel. We were so tired but during my research I saw they do fireworks show every Friday night on Waikiki Beach. I booked a dinner cruise where we could watch the fireworks from the ocean. The food on the cruise was amazing. Although it kind of ruined it for the trip because everything we ate was a disappointment compared to the food we ate on the ship. We made it without crashing. We were dead tired from flying all day and the time change.

The next day we went to the other side of the island. The beaches were beautiful. We chilled on the beach for a few hours. On the way back we stopped at a store and ate shrimp. I got food poisoning. We stopped at the Dole Plantation. Ate some pineapple ice cream. We checked out the Japanese Buddhist temple.

Sunday was the Super Bowl. I got to watch my Eagles lose to the Chiefs. We found a bar that had a projector screen and setup tons of chairs to watch the game.

Monday we flew to Maui. This island was much cleaner. We spent most of the time on the beach or the pool.

The highlight of Maui was that we took a whale watching cruise. At first, we didn’t see much. They were so far in the distance. But near the end we had one that was right next to the boat. It was swimming underneath from side to side. Everyone was running around the boat. The whale was definitely playing with us.

One night we went and grabbed some pizza. My wife likes Hawaiian. I thought it was funny ordering Hawaiian pizza in Hawaii. The guy got mad and said we don’t have Hawaiian pizza. I was like oh you are out of ham or pineapple. He said no, we have that, but we don’t call it Hawaiian pizza because ham and pineapple is not Hawaiian. The Canadians invented it. So, if you want ham and pineapple you need to order a Canadian pizza. $39 later we got our Canadian pizza. Most expensive pizza I ever ordered. And it wasn’t even that good. This place was ranked #1 too. Every single restaurant was expensive as hell. And none of the hotels offer all-inclusive. Felt like Hawaii was a tourist trap and money grab. But we can check it off the bucket list. I don’t think I will ever go back. Much better places that are so much cheaper.
